Ski area Großglockner Resort Kals-Matrei

The “SkiHit” lift pass gains you access to eight ski area in East Tyrol with a total of 186 km of piste incl. ski routes in the 8 regions of Großglockner Resort, Brunnalm/Defereggental, Sillian/Hochpustertal, Kartitsch, Lienz, Obertilliach, Mölltal Glacier, as well as Ankogel (see ski region). Through the connection of Matrei's and Kals' ski areas, the Großglockner Resort (933 - 2,422 m) was created and with 44.6 km of piste and 14 lifts is East Tyrol’s largest ski area. The originally 110 km of pistes have shrunk because of the recalculation of pistes according to the fall line. The pistes itself did, of course, not change.

Countless diverse runs are ideal for beginners and those more ambitious skiers, offering unlimited and snow sure fun. The Goldried gondola starts at Matrei and leads to the ski area, moreover the 6-person Cimaross lift transports winter sports fans up to an altitude of 2,426 m.

A children's ski park is located directly at the mountain station, which has a magic carpet and a cosy warm hut. Snowboarders will just love the two snow parks with slides and jumps. Natural snow and efficient snow machines make the ski area one of the most snow sure in the Alps.

Those who have a lot of energy should not miss the 7 km long run "Cimaross-Tal" to Matrei, with an altitude difference of 1,450 m. Pros will find challenging, black pistes at the Cimaross down to Matrei and the Blauspitz near Kals. The "Bichl" tow lifts and the 3 km beginners pistes that are ideal for the first moves in the snow are located in Prägraten.

Après ski Matrei

Après-ski in Matrei is rather cosy. The day is rounded off sociably here in a bar or pub. Definitely worthwhile, is a visit to the apres-ski bar in Hotel Goldried or “Fun” in “Tom's Pub”, which are both located in Matrei near the Goldried gondola's valley station.

A toboggan party on one of the Virgen Valley's toboggan runs is lots of fun after skiing. Nature lovers should not miss a guided snow shoe hike with the Hohe Tauern National Park's keepers.

After a long day on the piste, you can recharge your batteries in one of the many lodges and traditional pubs, where you will be served regional specialities, such as bacon or spinach Knödel (dumplings). Later in the evening, the BB-Bar is the main attraction for revellers, with trendy music and mix your own cocktails.

Lienz, which is only a 30 min. drive by car, has a lot in store for party goers. Furthermore, regular large sporting events, such as the "Dolomitensprint" or the women's Ski World Cup race, take place here: a super highlight for sports fans.

Snowpark: Snowpark Kals Matrei

The ski area union of Matrei and Kals, known as the "Grossglockner Resort", brings forth East Tyrol's biggest ski region.

But what does the resort have to offer for freestylers? This question is easily answered! Besides various deep snow slopes and numerous fast-paced pistes, an exclusive carver piste and funpark are awaiting you.

At the Cimaross lift you have the opportunity to fly high and be catapulted into the sky by various obstacles. Different kickers, rails, and slides are just waiting to be explored and will definitely fascinate you.
