Ski holidays Schmalkalden - romantic half-timbered town in central Germany!
Schmalkalden
The small Franconian town of Schmalkalden lies on the edge of the Thuringian Forest and pretty much right in the centre of Germany. Surrounded by wooded hills, it is beautifully quiet here and the town itself is extremely tranquil. Schmalkalden's townscape is characterised by very well-preserved half-timbered houses from the Middle Ages, which make the old town well worth seeing. Another architectural highlight in the town centre is Wilhelmsburg Castle, an important monument to Renaissance architecture. As Schmalkalden once belonged to Hesse, the Hessian landgrave resided in the castle. Wilhelmsburg Castle is therefore the only Hessian castle in Thuringia. The magnificent building is located in the centre of the town and is also open to visitors as a museum in winter.Against this unique, historical backdrop, the famous "Schmalkalder Herrscheklasmarkt" has a particularly impressive effect. Anyone visiting the town during Advent should not miss this historic Christmas market. The nearest ski area with family-friendly slopes and a toboggan run is located on the Inselsberg, around 30 minutes' drive north of Schmalkalden.
