Ski holidays Vernago – Relaxing holiday at the lake!

Vernago

Vernago (German: "Vernagt") lies at an altitude of 1,700 m in the upper half of Schnalstal. However, Vernago didn't always take up residence next to a lake. It was first in the 1950s that the 65 m high dam was established, thus creating the lake. This then caused 8 small farms to be swallowed up by the water. To this day, during springtime when the water levels are low, you can still see the town's old church steeple rising out of the lake, of which originally stood in the middle of the farms.

In the summertime, the lake stands out with its incomparably gorgeous teal-coloured water, and in the wintertime, Vernago is the optimal starting point for a day trip to the nearby glacier ski area - and the same time, the somewhat quieter alternative to the sporting village of Kurzras.

Val Senales

The 22 km long valley of Val Senales is the one most supported by tourism in the South Tyrol Vinschgau. Especially mentionable is the diverse scenery which can be found on such a small area - from the vineyards at the valley entrance right up to the sparkling ice at the glacier at the back end of the valley. The Schnalser Bach runs along the valley floor, which is used a water reservoir at the upper end of the valley, caused by the Vernagt dam. The region is not only known for its glacier ski area with its 27.5 km of piste. It also gained a lot of attention, caused by a German couple who were hiking in the upper end of the valley, at the Tisenjoch, where they found the ice mummy Ötzi, back in September 1991. The archaeological activity museum "ArcheoParc Schnals" therefore has dedicated itself to research and information on the life and surroundings of the "man from the ice".
